Dye Works Exhibition

Somé・Seiryukan Director Kimura Shigenobu

In 1994 on the occasion of the "Modern Dye" exhibition at the National Museum of Art, dye artist Fukumoto Shigeki wrote as follows: "A sweeping new exhibition displaying contemporary dye work has opened at our national Art Museum. This is indeed a rare event. There have been a number of exhibitions featuring the combined textile arts of weaving and dyeing, but almost never before has the art of dyeing alone been the focus of an exhibition. ("Minzoku Geijutsu" no. 11). Since the Meiji Restoration of 1868 opened Japan to Western influence, the fine arts such as painting have been valued highly, while it has been customary to consider the practical arts and crafts as a minor art form. However, in recent years this tendency has undergone a remarkable transformation. In the case of dye art, we have witnessed a series of important events, beginning with the aforementioned "Modern Dye" exhibition and going on to exhibitions of various dye art forms at other galleries, solo international exhibitions by prominent dye artists, and the introduction of a dye art category in the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and technology Awards for Art. This is due to the vitality of the contemporary dye art world so strongly centered in Kyoto, a vitality to which the Sieryukan has made a considerable contribution. The Seiryukan is now entering its 9th year, and we are (I am) delighted to witness its continued development down the years, with the introduction of such features as the selective rotation of exhibitors. We (I) wish the current Dye Museum project every success and an early completion.
