Dye Works Exhibition

Somé・Seiryukan Director Kimura Shigenobu

It may not be so well known, but in the West, resist-dyeing techniques for applying pattern to cloth weren’t known until the 19th Century. For the most part, textiles were embellished by weaving or embroidery, appliqué etc. In Europe, the history of pattern dyeing began in 1835 when Indonesian dyers were invited to Leiden, Holland where a textile company was established. Textile dyeing (senshoku in Japanese ) is a unique art developed from Japan, India and Indonesia, and Kyoto is at the center. The Somé Seiryuten is featuring dyed art in panel (traditional screen) and three-dimensional format by 39 artists who are active in Kyoto. They have been chosen on a commission basis by a nominating committee and a selecting committee. Their ages, affiliations, techniques and styles are diverse and varied. Many of the artists are also internationally active. Therefore this exhibition will directly reflect the present state of the world of textile dyeing. Through their fresh style, sophisticated technique and rich and expressive content, please see and experience for yourself this art of textile dyeing that has often been taken for granted.
