Dye Works Exhibition

Somé・Seiryukan Director Kimura Shigenobu

Studying is good for the mind and sports are good for the body. Art is good for the heart however one may not get favorable results right away as with studying and sports. However, the body blow in boxing really takes effect. Nowadays in the “age of the heart”, the role of art is significant, especially with textiles that are closely connected to daily life. From days of old, Kyoto has been known as one of the greatest textiles cities of the world, and it still is today. This year several textile artists who are active in Kyoto area will exhibit large textiles on panels at the Somé Seiryuten exhibition. The past four exhibitions have received a great response from the public. Therefore I trust that this year will no doubt present many dynamic works as well. Unfortunately the exhibition will be open for only one week, however with so many fine works, plans in the near future to establish a museum for dyed textile art are underway. We look forward to the day when we can bring together all the sophisticated contemporary textile dyed arts such as katazome, rozome, yuzen dyeing etc. that Kyoto is so proud of.
