Dye Works Exhibition

Somé・Seiryukan Director Kimura Shigenobu

Ornamentation began with the human impulse to clothe themselves, and this origin is evident in the ideograms used to write the word in Japanese, which include elements meaning clothing and cloth. Art, in turn, has its origins in the application of dye to this cloth and clothing. Yet today, there is a tendency to view dyeing as playing only a minor role in the contemporary art scene, as compared to painting or sculpture. The SOMÉ・SEIRYUKAN was established in response to this situation, with the hope that it would aid the further development of Kyoto as the "dye capital" of the world. Most of the exhibited works are scheduled to be housed in the soon to be completed Dye Museum. This year we will hold our fourth exhibition, in commemoration of the 1200th year since the founding of the Heian-kyo capital at present-day Kyoto.
It will open in conjunction with the NHK co-sponsored SOMÉ・ART exhibition, and in summer this year, the fourth International Textile Fair will also be held. It is hoped that these two events will add impetus to the newsworthiness of the art of dye in the wider community.
