Dye Works Exhibition

Somé・Seiryukan Director Kimura Shigenobu

In America, textile dyeing is referred to as “surface design”. However to us Japanese, this sounds odd because “dyeing” is not simply designs on the surface, but images that penetrate through to the backside of the cloth and paper. Therefore, the terms someru (dyeing) and shimishimi (staining) etc. have emerged. In Basho’s poem, “ Into the serene rock, the sound of cicadas penetrates…” the word “shimi-iru” is translated into English as “penetrate” or “sink in”. Therefore our Japanese sense seems quite different. There’s nothing quite like it. With Kyoto as a leading center, textile dyeing in Japan is well-known as a truly unique art. Next year artists active in the Kyoto area will once again hold the Somé Seiryuten exhibition. This year also will feature large scale folding screens and panels. The past two exhibitions brought in a large audience thanks to support from newspapers and television. This year’s Seiryuten exhibition will surely bring together many impressive works. It is with great admiration that I open the third Somé Seiryuten exhibition.
