Many months have passed since the SOMÉ・SEIRYUKAN first opened its doors. During this time there have been monthly exhibitions centered around dye technique or various themes. The beautiful correspondence between the artists' works and the perfect shadowless light diffusion achieved by the tatami mat exhibition space has been much praised. Foreigner visitors in particular have been impressed, owing to the lack of any term or tradition of atozome in Western dye techniques until the end of the nineteenth century.
A large sign saying SOMÉ hangs at the first floor entrance to the building, a symbol of the desire to replace present internationally-recognized terms such as the English "surface design" (a word created in 1977 to express atozome) or the Indonesian term "batik" (resist dyeing) with this catch-all Japanese term. (The French accent on the e is to avoid the problem of English speakers mistaking its pronunciation, which otherwise appears to be like the English word "some".) It is highly significant that in Kyoto, the dye art capital, the 16th exhibition is now opening in the SOMÉ・SEIRYUKAN, the first-ever dedicated dye art gallery.
