Dye Works Exhibition

Somé・Seiryukan Director Kimura Shigenobu

On this occasion, I have taken the word "kimono" as the theme for the pieces I create. In this case, the word is used in its fundamental sense of "something worn", and includes clothing throughout the world, such as the wrap (seen in Indian saris etc.), clothing with a hole for the head (such as the poncho of South America), clothing wrapped around the hips (as in the Indonesian sarong), clothing open at the front (the Japanese kimono or the Korean chogori), trouser-style clothing (as developed in the West), etc. I have chosen clothing in this way because of its intimate relation to dyeing, and because the technical limitations it imposes are greater than those of the fine arts. Dye artists dedicate themselves to achieving their highest art within the limits of these restrictions, indeed embrace the restrictions willingly. For this reason, we find an extravagant imagination at work in dye art, as well as a deep entanglement with technical limitations. Indeed it can happen that the resistance of the material and technique provides the spur for the imagination. Clothing (kimono) is a concrete instance of these restrictions. The challenge lies in whether to perceive these restrictions simply as an unwanted imposition, or to accept and embrace them. My hope is that through this struggle, new horizons will open.
