Dye Works Exhibition

Somé・Seiryukan Director Kimura Shigenobu

Some time ago, I wrote a book titled In the Beginning was the Image (published by Iwanami Shinsho). Through my study of artistic phenomena throughout the world, it became clear to me that the image is not, as most people mistakenly think, something that belongs under the rubric of Logos, or the Word. My point was that the "In the beginning was the Word" of Genesis is a false assertion, and that in fact it was the Image that came first. The function of the Image first made possible symbolic thought, which in turn gave rise to philosophy, religion and science. Yet there is still a strongly-held belief that Logos is primary, and the Image only of secondary status. Those who write are held in higher esteem than those who make pictures, and so illiterate Africans are despised as "uncivilized", and anxious mothers drive their children from in front of the TV set to read books at their desk. All this is owing to the fact that we have a deeply ingrained habit of translating everything in terms of the world of Logos.
Of course, I am not denying Logos its place. All I am pointing out is the original primacy of the Image in human life, and the fact that human culture is characterized by the Image's transformation into Logos. the SOMÉ・SEIRYU exhibition springs from the same fundamental idea, in that by promoting dye art in Kyoto, the world capital of dye art, it is playing its part in the restoration of the much-abused Image to its rightful place.
