Dye Works Exhibition

Somé・Seiryukan Director Kimura Shigenobu

"I'm not selling! Never! Go home!" So grimly declared Higashi Tojiro, the elderly head of an old family home in Sendaiji, Ibaraki, one of the strongholds for the "hidden Christian" community that survived in secret down the centuries after Christianity was banned in Japan. Facing him was Ikenaga Takeshi, and what they were discussing was whether Higashi was willing to sell a portrait of "Saint Xavier" (the Jesuit priest Francis Xavier, who brought Christianity to Japan in the 16th century). "Only if you'll let me name any price I like," Higashi finally joked, and the end result was that the deal was concluded for the unheard-of price of 35,000 yen. To raise this money, Ikenaga sold his luxurious second house in Tarumi, Kobe. The year was 1935. Said Ikenaga, "Lots of folk are good at making money, but you don't find many who are good at spending it well. . . The fact that this great international city of Kobe has not one art museum is a national disgrace that speaks of the low cultural level of our people."
This idea was the driving force behind Ikenaga's investing almost all his huge personal fortune to create the collection of "Namban" art (Western art introduced to Japan in the 16th century) , displayed in the Ikenaga Art Museum which opened in Kobe in 1940. In 1951, both the building and its virtually priceless contents of 4,500 pieces was transferred to Kobe City when the Kobe Museum was built.
Ikenaga is said to have ruined himself over his craze for Namban art. Yet he believed that "Art is most certainly not a question of mere entertainment or interest. It must have the mission of raising the soul of the populace to its highest possible level." His admirable life was an honest expression of this belief in action.
It is just as he said. For all the differences between Namban art and dye art, in Ozawa Junji we see a passion close to that of Ikenaga. All those who create the works on exhibit here yearn for the support of such lovers of art, and of dye.
