Dye Works Exhibition

Somé・Seiryukan Director Kimura Shigenobu

In 1994, the exhibition "Modern Dye" was held at the National And International Museum of Art, centering on a number of medium-level Seiryukan committee member artists. The same period saw the "Contemporary Dye ・Four Artists" exhibition of works by dye artist elders Sano Takeo, Miura Kageo, Isa Kazuhiko and Raino Tsukio, as well as exhibitions by young cutting edge dye artists. A group of Western crafts artists who were in Japan at the time visited these exhibits, and all were impressed by the excellence of Japan's dye art. They were particularly impressed by the subtle dye effects achieved. America's Morris Louis admired the so-called "raw canvas" technique, in which the colors penetrate the untreated base material, as techniques of resist dyeing on plain cloth were unknown in the West until the 19th century. In Japan, the word someru (to dye) came into being early, together with a variety of cognates and metaphorical extensions such as shimiru (to penetrate deeply), shimikomu (to sink deeply into), najimu (to grow used to, literally to be penetrated by) and shimijimi (an adjective expressing thoroughness or depth of experience), words still used today. However, it could be argued that words strictly equivalent to someru and shimiru do not exist in Western languages. Thus, when the famous haiku by Matsuo Basho, shizukasa ya iwa ni shimiiru semi no koe (Such quietness — / the cicada's song / sinks deep into rock) is translated , it is common to express shimiiru by such words as "penetrate" or "sink into" (English) or "vriller" (French). (I should add here that the English word "dye" means the application of color to thread, not the creation of pattern in cloth with dye.) The development of the Japanese some tradition centered particularly around Kyoto, as is still the case today. It is for this reason that Kyoto is a kind of mecca for dye art, drawing many from other countries to study dyeing here. The SOMÉ・SEIRYUKAN is an institution that displays the highest levels attained by contemporary dye art, with its many techniques and expressive forms. May it continue to grow and thrive.
