Dye Works Exhibition

Somé・Seiryukan Director Kimura Shigenobu

Business entrepreneur Ohara Sonsaburo, who established the Ohara Art Museum, was also a prominent member of the Christian community. As well as taking an active interest in the Ohara Scholarship Association, the Soshiki Education Colloquium and the Ishii Memorial Benevolent Association, he also made considerable contributions to the scholarly world by founding the Ohara Social Problems Research Center, the Ohara Agricultural Research Center and the Soshiki Labor Science Research Center. He onceexpressed himself as follows: "I have helped humanity in numerous ways over my lifetime, but the thing that gives me most pleasure is the art museum I created. The life of a man is short, but art lives long." Precisely so. Thus also did the SOMÉ・SEIRYUKAN come into being as the inspiration of Ozawa Junji's desire to one day create a dye art museum in Kyoto. Thanks to the driving power of Ozawa's original intention, this museum has overcome the recent difficulties of the economic recession to welcome its eleventh year of exhibiting. That tiny seedling the once grew in a hidden corner of Kyoto has since grown and burgeoned. We (I) pray that in the new millenium it will go on to become a great tree bearing the precious new fruit of the planned Dye Museum.
