Dye Works Exhibition

Somé・Seiryukan Director Kimura Shigenobu

In Japan, the term sakizome (pre-dyeing) is used to refer to the patterned weaving of dyed thread, while atozome (post-dyeing) refers to patterning created by dye applied to unpatterned cloth. " This distinction was not recognized in Europe until recent times, owing to the fact that there was no tradition of pattern dyeing of woven cloth using a resist technique until the introduction of the batik technique from Indonesia and India in the 19th century. Thus we find no traditional equivalent term in Western languages that covers the meaning of the Japanese some (including as it does both pre- and post-dyeing) or its cognate somi. Influenced by Japan, dye art has in recent decades gained considerable popularity in America and other countries, and in 1977 the new term "surface design" was introduced to refer to this art form. However, this term sounds strange to Japanese ears, as dyeing is not simply a matter of surface application but of deep penetration of cloth or paper. The art of dyeing in its broadest sense developed in certain Asian countries, and in Japan it has long centered around the city of Kyoto. The SOMÉ・SEIRYUKAN brings together the dye artists active in the Kyoto area. This year will mark the tenth anniversary of its exhibitions, and we (I) look forward to an exhibition that outshines even those of previous years.
